Gage Zachery Pilkington, 20, of Wister died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, in Oklahoma City. Services will be held at 10 am, Saturday, May 18, in Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will visit with relatives and friends at Evans and Miller Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Friday.Â
The Army Corps of Engineers announced Tuesday that area campgrounds that are maintained by the department will remain closes for the 2013 season.
Camp sites at Short Mountain Cove, Applegate Cove, Cowlington and Dam site day-area will not be open for use this year.
The Corps blames the closures on recent budget cuts that leave a financial shortfall resulting in the department not being able to hire contract employees to maintain the campgrounds. Officials are unsure how long the monetary restraints will remain in place.

After winning state as a sophomore and a junior, and being state runner-up as a senior, Poteau wrestler Tyler Tustin was pretty much destined to grapple at the collegiate level. He made it official Wednesday morning.
Tustin signed with the University of Central Oklahoma in a signing ceremony Wednesday morning at the high school.
Many lucky Poteau High School soccer players won awards and recognitions at Tuesday night's awards banquet at the First United Methodist Church.
KI BOIS Community Action will join Community Action Agencies across the country in hosting events and activities throughout May aimed at highlighting poverty problems and solutions. Due to the uncertain economic climate – still reeling from the Great Recession and high unemployment rates – Community Action Agencies feel it is critical to focus local, state and national attention and efforts on helping our most vulnerable population.
Kevin Paul Statham, 51, of Bokoshe, was charged in the July 2011 shooting deaths of his parents, Paul,Statham, 70, and Helen Statham, 69. at their home on Old Bokoshe Road.
According to information released by the OSBI and LeFlore County Sheriff’s Department a family member went to the Statham's home and found Helen Statham dead in the back yard. Paul Statham, also deceased, was found inside the home. Both had died from gunshot wounds, according to court records.
In May 2012, District Attorney Jeff Smith filed notice seeking the death penalty against Statham.
It is just me, or does it seem like this spring seasons of baseball and slow-pitch softball flew by faster than the Concorde.
It just seems like yesterday I was preparing the 2013 Spring Sports Guide for publication over spring break, and now all the seasons are done.
However, the end to them was rather nice. You had the Poteau Pirates soccer team winning state, along with Poteau Lady Pirate golfer Hannah Ward for her second straight season.
Kenneth Milton Shakingbush, 74, of Panama died Monday, May 13. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 17, at Cowlington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home, Spiro.

The Poteau Pirates baseball team had quite a season this spring under first-year coach Andy Perdue. They won 29 games to set a school record, as well as setting team records in at-bats (1,000), runs scored (280), hits (341), runs batted in (215), doubles (77), sacrifice bunts/flies (47), walks (145) and stolen bases (149). The Pirates won the 32nd LeFlore County Tournament, won the Class 4A Regional Tournament and got to within a victory of the state tournament — losing 10-0 to Byng in the winner-take-all regional final on May 6 at Town Creek Park.
