As Fourth of July nears, citizens should be reminded of firework ordinances within the city of Poteau.

As per ordinance codes, it is against the law to explode or ignite fireworks within 500 feet of any church, hospital, nursing home, clinic or public school within city limits.

It also is illegal to set off fireworks within 500 feet of a home where an ill person is known be to be confined, or to set them off within one city block of Dewey Avenue from the Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center down to the LeFlore County Courthouse.

This information is provided by the City of Poteau ordinance codes.

Poteau Police said, "Keep in mind that even if you don't live in a prohibited area of town that fireworks may violate the public nuisance ordinance, at which point an officer will ask that you cease discharging fireworks at that time."

PD said it will only become a problem if someone calls and complains.

"Also," Poteau Police added, "If you are using the street for your display please watch for traffic, and if you place it there it is your responsibility to remove it."

The department added fireworks can be shot off at any time, but noise caused by the display may fall under the public nuisance ordinance, "at which point officers will ask that you halt any fireworks at that time."

Here are some firework safety tips to keep in mind, as provided by the state Health Department.

• Obey all state and local laws regarding the sale, possession and use of fireworks.
• A responsible adult should supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children.
• Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
• Make sure you, your kids and others watch fireworks from a safe distance.
• Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area, away from buildings and vehicles.
• Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
• Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.
• Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and placing in a metal trash can away from any buildings or combustible materials until the next day.
