One dead after Lake Wister boating accident Thursday

A tragedy on Lake Wister has left one man dead after two boats collided Thursday (Aug. 3, 2017) evening.

Matthew Place, 39, of Wister did not make it home after colliding with another boat around a point at Wister Lake, according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Williams.

At just after 6 p.m. on Thursday, Place collided with another boat being driven by Martin Dunigan, 43, of Poteau, who was transported to Sparks Regional Medical Center in stable condition with a leg injury. According to the report, he was treated and released. A passenger was also involved, Jason Reeves, 31, of Heavener, but no injuries were reported for him.

Both vessels were equipped with life jackets but they weren't in use by either vessel, according to the report. The weather was clear.

Following the accident, it was announced that the LeFlore County Bass Club Open Bass Fishing Tournament scheduled for this Saturday at Wister has been canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date.
