Poteau engineer involved in Adair County train fatality

A Kansas City Southern train engineer from Poteau was involved in a fatality accident after a semi pulled out into the path of the train on Friday.

The accident happened around 1 p.m. on a county road three miles outside Westville in Adair County.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Timothy Schmidt, 54, of Neosho, Mo., was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services. Schmidt was driving a 2013 Peterbuilt eastbound when he traveled into the path of the KCS train carrying 124 cars. OHP said Schmidt was ejected from the vehicle.

According to the accident report, KCS engineer David Fredrickson, 44, of Poteau and 35-year-old conductor Jonathan Logston of Fort Smith, Ark., were both treated and released from the hospital.

The accident was investigated by OHP Trooper Matt Williams of the Adair County detachment of Troop C with assistance from Lt. Billy Golden and Trooper Rodney Vick.
